Then Justin, a captain for a major airline out of O'Hare, lightly mentioned an idea. Almost like he was testing the waters. What if we brought a plane into this?

I think part of him expected me to say it was too much, too complicated, or too far outside what a "normal" engagement shoot looks like.

I said hell yes.

Because here's the thing: when a couple hands me a piece of their real life — their career, their community, the thing that actually shaped how they met and how they live — that's not a complication. That's the whole assignment.

Why We Skipped the Obvious "Pilot" Angle

It would have been easy to lean hard into "airline captain" as the theme — O'Hare, jet bridges, a commercial cockpit. But that felt sterile. Corporate. Disconnected from them.

Justin's world isn't really about a major airline terminal. It's about a smaller, tighter-knit community of pilots, hangars, and history — people who fly because they love flying, not because it's a job. So instead of chasing the commercial angle, we went looking for something with more soul.

That search led us to Buggy.

Starting Downtown: Barrel & Vine

Every great engagement story needs a beginning that feels like them, and for Mandy and Justin, that beginning was downtown Lemont at Barrel & Vine — one of our mutual favorite local spots. There's something about that bar: the wall of bottles catching the light, the exposed brick, the easy, upbeat, city-adjacent energy in the middle of a small town. It's Lemont at its best.

Then, Buggy: A Vintage Warbird at Lewis University Airport

We caravanned in two cars out to the private hangar area near Lewis University Airport in Romeoville, and that's where we found her: a gorgeous vintage yellow biplane the local aviation community affectionately calls Buggy, parked beneath her own hand-painted historic emblems.

For the history buffs: aircraft like Buggy are almost certainly descendants of the Boeing-Stearman, the bright-yellow, open-cockpit biplane that trained the vast majority of American military pilots during World War II — nicknamed the "Yellow Peril" for that unmistakable paint job, and now beloved by vintage aircraft enthusiasts and community groups from Girl Scout troops to local charity events, all these decades later.

Buggy isn't just a prop. She's a retired piece of living history, still community-loved and community-shown — which made her the perfect stand-in for what actually matters to Mandy and Justin: connection, community, and a love of the sky that's bigger than any one job.

We photographed them everywhere around her — leaning against the wing in golden light, sharing a kiss with the propeller behind them, wrapped up together on the tarmac, and tucked into a field of wildflowers just off the runway with Buggy blurred softly in the background. Justin lifted Mandy off her feet on the quiet path back to the cars, and that image alone tells you everything about how he feels about her.

Why I Don't Photograph From a Pinterest Board

Here's what I want every couple reading this to understand about how I work: I'm not interested in recreating someone else's photo.

When couples reach out to me, I spend far less time asking about trending poses or "must-have" shot lists, and far more time asking questions like:

How did you two actually meet?
What does your day-to-day life together look like?
What's a place, an object, or a community that means something real to you?
Where do you actually want to be standing when you look back at these in twenty years?

You tell me your values and your big dreams. My job is figuring out how to photograph that — in the most romantic, dreamy, and honest way possible.

That's the difference between a good engagement session and a forgettable one. Anyone can point a camera at two people in a field. Very few photographers will spend the planning process helping you unlock a location, a story, and a visual narrative that's entirely, unmistakably yours.
